Nielsen BookData, a VNU company formed in 2002 from the merger of two of the leading suppliers of information and services to the UK book industry, Whitaker Information Services and Book Data, has been appointed as a DOI Registration Agency. The company will begin to offer, from later this year, DOI based services for publications and other resources from publishers and other content providers for use in education, training and leisure; and for metadata collection for resource discovery, and for the support of ordering and market analysis services.
The consulting firm EPS has just completed a study using conservative and rigorous assumptions to quantify a 12-to-1 payback for investment in DOIs. The study was based on EPS' independent research and analysis, including independent interviews both with customers of CDI (a DOI Registration Agency) and with third parties. The study can be obtained free of charge via its DOI, at
doi:10.1220/eps1.
This complements the earlier "Business Case for Information Publishers" study by Bill Rosenblatt which analysed the economic benefits of using DOIs for Enterprise Content Integration [
doi:10.1220/whitepaper5]. It will also be followed by three further forthcoming papers, analysing benefits associated with content syndication, online partnering, supply-chain efficiency and other sources of return-on-investment.

A new series of DOI Factsheets has been launched on the DOI website. The first, "DOI and Handle" analyses the differences between DOI and the underlying Handle technology in an easy-to-understand format, pointing out the nine key areas where DOI adds features and value to the best infrastructure component available today for managing digital objects.

The R R Bowker company, part of Cambridge Information Group, joined the International DOI Foundation in January, and have declared their intention to become a DOI Registration Agency. R R Bowker includes the US ISBN agency.
The International DOI Foundation has been shortlisted to act as the Registration Authority of the ISO MPEG 21 Rights Data Dictionary. This follows the IDF's earlier efforts with others in developing, and successfully having adopted as baseline technology, the concepts of interoperable metadata as a solution to MPEG's call for a common dictionary or vocabulary for intellectual property rights. The
DOI web site has been completely revised, with a new format aimed at improving content organisation and navigation for users. Please visit the site and see the new features.
The DOI is a system for interoperably identifying and exchanging
intellectual property in the digital environment. A DOI assigned to content enhances a content producer's ability to trade electronically. It provides a framework for managing content in any form at any level of granularity, for linking customers with content suppliers, for facilitating electronic commerce, and enabling automated copyright management for all types of media. The International DOI Foundation, a non-profit organization, manages development, policy and licensing of the DOI to registration agencies and technology providers and advises on usage and development of related services and technologies. The DOI system uses open standards with a standard syntax (ANSI/NISO Z39.84) and is currently used by leading international technology and content organizations.
This is a service announcement for the International Digital Object
Identifier Foundation and has been prepared to increase your awareness about important developments to enable digital copyright management of intellectual property. For more information, please send your request to contact@doi.org.
